The-WailingThis Thursday, Splendid Cinema finishes its summer season with the intense Korean horror film, The Wailing.

22 June: The Wailing/Goksung (KR, Hong-jin Na, 2016) 15 cert. 156 min
K-horror from acclaimed director Na (The Yellow Sea) about a mysterious illness in a small village which may be a supernatural curse spread by a Japanese recluse who lives in the mountains nearby. But in the 21st century, where do you find a shaman powerful enough to defeat this enemy?

thumb_5722_film_poster_bigNew film from the acclaimed director of A Separation (2011). During final rehearsals for a stage production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, one of the actresses is attacked (possibly raped) whilst showering in what should be the safety of her own apartment. Her husband takes it on himself to try and find the culprit while also wrestling with his guilt about not being home when the attack took place.

Splendid Cinema presents Paterson by Jim Jarmusch

25 May: Paterson-2016-Jim-Jarmusch.335-poster-450Paterson (US, FR, DE, Jim Jarmusch, 2016) 15 cert. 118 min.
Beautifully realised American independent film about a New Jersey bus driver who notices the little details of daily life and tries to capture them in his poetry. It is a little early in his career to call Paterson a “career best” for actor Adam Driver, but his performance in this film is extraordinary in its subtly and nuance.

11 May – Splendid gets GREASY!

11 May: The Greasy Strangler (US, GB, Jim Hosking, 2016) 18 cert. 93 min
Greasy strangler.jpgRescheduled screening! An audacious feature film debut by British filmmaker Jim Hosking. Similar in tone (and disgust level) to John Waters’ celebrated Pink Flamingos, Ronnie and his son Brayden compete for the love of the voluptuous Janet; meanwhile a grease-covered serial killer is stalking the bizarre residents. Laugh-out-loud funny, this film is an honest-to-goodness “instant cult classic”!

Seriously NSFW trailer!

Things get scary at Splendid Cinema this Thursday evening …

27 April, 2017: under-the-shadow-2Under the Shadow (GB, QA, JO, Babak Anvari, 2016) 15 cert. 84 min.

BAFTA Award Winner 2017 – Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer!
I won’t say this supernatural thriller set in Tehran during the height of the Iran-Iraq war, where a mother and young daughter struggle to cope with the terror of almost nightly bombardments, while also haunted by a malevolent spirit, is the scariest film of the year, but, like The Babadook, it’s damn scary!

Embrace of the Serpent at Splendid Cinema

OK, so this film is a bit of a hard sell; not because it is “difficult” or “politically provocative” but because it is a very quiet, and exceptionally beautiful, film. Those who attend will be well rewarded for the effort.

30 March, 2017: Embrace of the Serpent/El abrazo de la serpiente (CO, AR, VE, Ciro Guerra, 2015) 12 cert. 125 min.

Embrace of the Serpent

The story of the relationship between Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and last survivor of his people, and two scientists who work together over the course of 40 years to search the Amazon for a sacred healing plant. A truly beautiful, moving and spiritually challenging film.
